Donations to this Fundraiser Welcome!
Dr. Elaine Ostrander (National Institute of Health in Maryland) and Dr. Catherine Andre (University of Rennes in France) are collaborating on research on histiocytic sarcoma in the Bernese Mountain Dog.

In the previous study that the Berner Lovers supported for Drs. Ostrander and Andre, they collected genomic DNA from affected and unaffected Bernese Mountain Dogs in North America and Europe, and both independent and combined genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were used to identify cancer-associated loci. Fine mapping and sequencing narrowed the primary locus to a single gene region in both of the studies. They published a paper on the Bernese Mountain dogs from this study that was featured on the cover of one of the major scientific journals. The paper focused on that one genetic region and they now want look for the gene that controls the other locus. Since they have no designated funding for this project, they can't move forward with their research.
HERE IS WHERE ALL OF YOU BERNER LOVERS ENTER INTO THE PICTURE!!
The 2012 Berner Lovers' Willem Wijnberg Cancer Fundraiser is officially launched! The money we collect with this fundraiser will go towards funding the next step in Dr. Elaine Ostrander's and Dr. Catherine Andre's research on histio in the Bernese Mountain Dog. Any money we raise beyond what they need will go towards supporting other cancer research in Berners.
This fundraiser is in honor of Willem Wijnberg who has painted most of the items for our previous Cancer Fundraisers. He was unable to paint the items this year, so I have collected a huge number of items from generous Berner Lovers for you to try to win!
Ticket prices are:
checks/cheques payable to: Joye M. Neff
1182 Firwood Drive
Pittsburgh, PA 15243-1881
** I can accept foreign cheques with no additional fees to convert the funds to US dollars as long as they are under $100, so if you are going to send more than $100, please break it into smaller cheques so none are over $100." .
Please give generously knowing you have a chance to win one of these beautiful items
An anonymous donor will donate up to $300 to our Cancer Fundraiser if we get 150 people to add both the date of death and the cause of death of their former Berners. Add your Berners at the Rainbow Bridge -$2 will be donated for every date of death and cause of death entered into the Berner-Garde database. As an added bonus, Val Horney and two other anonymous Berner Lovers are also donating $5 to Berner-Garde for every date of death and cause of death, in memory of Mark Milligan.

Challenge #2 - COMPLETE!
An anonymous Berner Lover has donated $500 to the fundraiser and instead of taking tickets has asked me to give 4 FREE Tier ONE tickets (or if you prefer 20 FREE Tier TWO tickets) to anyone who makes a donation of $40 or more to the fundraiser!
The Lone Star Bernese Mountain Dog Club (Texas) has made a $300 donation and has challenged all other Berner Clubs, both in the USA and in other countries, to match their donation (or whatever amount their club can give.) Last year we were able to raise a little over $58,000 to support Dr. Matthew Breen's research on histio. We had amazing support from the Berner Clubs in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and from Berner Lovers from many other other countries.
Challenge #4 -
Purchase a Berner Gift Box from Montana Grassland Mixes (Patsy and Rick Thista) and they will make a nice donation to our cancer fundraiser
George Pappas has donated $500 plus an anonymous donor has donated $500 for a total of $1,000. IF we can raise $1,000 in the next week, they both will match their $500 donations, giving us an additional $1,000.That is AWESOME!! I know that we can do it!!!
An anonymous donor has pledged $1,500 and asked me to use her tickets as an additional challenge. Anyone who makes a donation of $100 or more will receive an additional 80 FREE TIER ONE TICKETS!!
An anonymous donor has pledged $300 and anyone who makes a donation of any amount and is a first time donor to one of my fundraisers will receive 10 FREE TIER ONE TICKETS!!
I have a great challenge from Patti Finley. She has donated eight "To Go Travel Coffee Mugs" that have silhouettes of standing and gaiting Berners on them for our challenge. Here is a photo of the Coffee Mugs: https://www.etsy.com/listing/116919902/bernese-mountain-dog-gaiting-on-thermal https://www.etsy.com/listing/116920546/bernese-mountain-dog-silhouettes-on
All donations up to $39 will receive one chance to win one of these great Berner Travel Mugs. When I do the drawing of prizes, I will pick eight lucky winners for the mugs!
And remember if your donation is between $40 and $99, you will also get 20 ADDITIONAL FREE TIER ONE TICKETS from Tom McKinney!!
Our goal for the 2012 Berner Lovers' Willem Wijnberg Cancer Fundraiser was to raise $20,000 - $10,000 for both Dr. Elaine Ostrander's and $10,000 for Dr. Catherine Andre's research on histiocytic sarcoma in Bernese Mountain Dogs. We came within $633.08 of our goal - we were able to raise $19,366.92. I am hoping that some of the late checks will still come in and we can still hit our goal!!
(At this point in time I usually do a marathon packing frenzy and pack up the prizes and mail them out over the weekend, however this year I will not be able to spend the time necessary to do that so quickly. On February 6th, my husband, Bill, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow which affects the skeletal system. We have spent a lot of time in the hospital and at the cancer and pain clinics over the past twelve days, and that is why there was a delay in the drawing of the winning tickets. Bill gets a port installed this Friday and will begin his chemo treatments (45 weeks) on Monday, Feb. 25th. I will work on packing a few prizes at a time and getting them mailed when I have time each day, so I thank you in advance for your patience with me in getting the prizes mailed out to everyone.)
We had donations from 35 of the 50 states in the USA, 3 provinces and Canada, plus two other countries. Here are the results of the donations by states, provinces and countries:
If your state, province or country is not represented, you can still send me a check/cheque to help us hit our $20,000 goal. I am happy to accept more checks/cheques to achieve our goal.
The very lucky winners are:
For the Histio Roll Call of just some of our Berners lost to this cancer
and why your donations are so very important!
